Area student completes basic training at West Point

Cadet Henry Baez Guerra, a 2011 graduate of TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas, completed Cadet Basic Training (CBT) at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. Guerra entered West Point on June 27 and has successfully completed six weeks of CBT. Also referred to as “Beast Barracks,” CBT is one of the most challenging event cadets encounter during four years at the Academy. This initial military training program provides cadets with basic skills to instill discipline, pride, cohesion and confidence to prepare them for entry into the Corps of Cadets. Area student named scholarship finalist

Megan Abbott of Fair Oaks Ranch, a rising senior at TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas, was named a finalist for a Samsung American Legion Scholarship Abbott is one of 100 national finalists for 12 scholarships, each worth $12,000. She was selected by the staff of Texas Bluebonnet Girls State, held June 12-18 at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin. Samsung, an electronics company founded in Korea, joined with the American Legion to offer this educational opportunity to the descendants of wartime veterans who served honorably. TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas has announced the recipients of its 2011 Rising Stars awards for outstanding young alumni. Jenna Lucado Bishop ’02 and Capt. Andrew Yang ’97 will be honored at Stars over TMI, the school’s annual gala to be held Oct. 1. Panther basketball takes UT camp championship!

The TMI boys basketball team dominated the July 8-10 basketball camp at the University of Texas at Austin, finishing with a 10-0 record and clinching the championship in their division. The Panthers fought through three tournament games, coming from behind each time to claim victory. The team won their last game in double overtime against the second team from Houston’s Kingwood High School, a 5A basketball powerhouse, although Panther star rebounder Shane Winter was taken out early with a concussion. 2011 Rising Star: CPT Andrew Yang ’97

CPT Andrew Yang is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy (West Point). After graduation, he qualified to fly Apache helicopters and received officer training in military intelligence.  He has served In South Korea, at Fort Hood and in Iraq and Afghanistan. Yang will begin graduate school this fall to pursue an MBA from the University of Houston and a master’s degree in global management from the Thunderbird School of Global Management, after which he will become a regional commander for West Point admission in the Southwest. TMI names new Taylor scholar

TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas has awarded a Robert B. Taylor Scholarship to Aaron Cornelius, who will be a freshman at TMI in the 2011-2012 school year. The Taylor Scholarship is a four-year award given to a rising ninth-grader who has demonstrated scholarship and worthy character. As a middle-school student at TMI, Cornelius made “A” Honor Roll rankings, has twice received a National Latin Award, played basketball, football and soccer and holds a black belt in karate. TMI graduates named National Merit Scholars

Two graduates of TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas have received awards through the National Merit Scholarship program. Luke Matus and Spencer Romo, both 2011 graduates, were named National Merit Scholars. Matus, who will attend McGill University in Montreal, Canada, received a scholarship sponsored by USAA; and Romo, who will attend Washington University in St. Louis, received a scholarship sponsored by the university.
