The TMI boys basketball team dominated the July 8-10 basketball camp at the University of Texas at Austin, finishing with a 10-0 record and clinching the championship in their division.
The Panthers fought through three tournament games, coming from behind each time to claim victory. The team won their last game in double overtime against the second team from Houston’s Kingwood High School, a 5A basketball powerhouse, although Panther star rebounder Shane Winter was taken out early with a concussion. In the second half, says Head Basketball Coach Bob Pels, Shane’s teammates “came back and won it for him.”
TMI was one of 14 schools competing in the camp’s small-varsity division. “This team showed a lot of heart in a pretty intense situation,” says Coach Pels. “It was a good start. We’re going to have a good year.”
TMI players who participated were: Matt Casias, Eugenio Duron, Mario Duron, Jarvis Ford, Claudio Martinez, Matt Oldfather, J.T. Plummer, Steele Sessions, Nathanael Sherrod, Shane Winter, Sam Zachry and Augustin Zurita.
