TMI Corps of Cadets to compete in National Youth Cyber Defense Competition

Texas Military Institute (TMI) Corps of Cadets announced its participation in the eighth season of CyberPatriot’s National Youth Cyber Defense Competition. Beginning on October 17, 2015, Cadets and students from the TMI’s high school and middle school will compete in the CyberPatriot Middle School, Open High School and JROTC Divisions against similar teams across the country. This is the first year TMI will have 5 separate teams competing and the first year it will compete in the Middle School and Open Divisions. Corps of Cadets members participate in the JROTC Academic Bowl

Six members of the TMI Corps of Cadets participated in the 2014-2015 JROTC Academic Bowl: Cadets Lincoln Abbott, Christopher Clark, Saad Ehsan, Garrett Lindemood, Juan Pablo Martinez, and Sofia Miranda-Fred. The TMI team scored a 90% overall. One of the main goals of the JROTC Academic Bowl is to prepare students for state exit/graduation exams as well as college entrance exams, such as the SAT and ACT. Questions about current events were also included – focusing on national and international news, particularly international relations, politics, business and science. The Texas Military Institute Corps of Cadets (JROTC) of TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas announced its October Cadet of the Month awards for Upper and Middle School. They are: Ana Paula Velasco, a sophomore in Charlie Company; and Jordan Aw, a seventh grader also in Charlie Company. These cadets were nominated by their companies to compete in the monthly contest. Cadets were inspected, quizzed on TMI Corps knowledge and local and national chains of command until there was one winner from each division. Corps Rifle Marksmanship and Physical Fitness Awards

Marksmanship awardees: Cadets received scores for their ability to shoot in three positions: the prone unsupported position, the kneeling position and the standing position. Each of these shooting positions could receive a score of 100 points with a total of 300 points maximum. Those individuals who qualified for the Marksmanship award, scored between 150 to 174 points. Three students from TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas were nominated to attend Texas Boys State 2014, to be held June 8-13 on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. Juniors Cadet Command Sgt. Maj. Markell Henderson, Cadet 1st. Sgt. Gerardo Martinez and Cadet Sgt. 1st class Leo Solis, all members of the Texas Military Institute Corps of Cadets (JROTC), will represent TMI as delegates to the annual conference. TMI student wins military scholarship

Markell Henderson, a junior at TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas, is the recipient of a Purple Heart Scholarship, a merit award sponsored by the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States, of which TMI is a member, and the Purple Heart Service Foundation. He was presented with a certificate March 24 in daily chapel.
