Karla Ortiz, who teaches English as a Second Language at TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas, has been accepted to the Honor Society at Lamar University, where she is pursuing a master’s degree in Educational Leadership. Membership in the society is based on GPA and a nomination, recognizing student success and encouraging further achievement. Lamar University is a public research university located in Beaumont. Sophomore Lincoln Abbot receives top award for interview with a Korean War vet

Sophomore Lincoln Abbott was awarded first place for his essay, “Mr. James Craswell in the Korean War,” in the Third Annual San Antonio Korean War Essay Contest sponsored by the Korean American Association. This year’s contest commemorated the 60th anniversary of the Korean War. The purpose of the contest was to expose area high school students to the historical importance of the Korean War and to understand and appreciate the amount of service and sacrifice demonstrated by American Military Forces during the Korean War. TMI poetry winner bound for state

Elizabeth Holmes, a freshman at TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas, is the winner of the school’s Poetry Out Loud recitation contest and will advance to the state finals to be held Feb. 22 in Austin. Second-place winner is sophomore Sofia Miranda-Fred, who is also the alternate if Holmes is unavailable to compete at the state level. The TMI competition was held Dec. 2 in the school’s Margaret M. Alkek Theater with eight contestants representing all four Upper School grades. TMI sixth-grader chosen for elite academic program

Bailey Dietzmann, a sixth-grader at TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas, has qualified for participation in the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY), an academic center at Johns Hopkins University. Entering the CTY 2013-2014 Talent Search last June, Dietzmann took the Advanced Scholastic and College Ability Test (SCAT), designed for students in grades nine through 12, in combination with the center’s Spatial Test Battery (STB) and earned scores that made her eligible to take part in the center’s summer courses, including residential programs at college campuses on the east and west coasts. TMI student earns National Achievement honor

Phillip Greenfield, a senior at TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas, was named an Outstanding Participant by the National Achievement Scholarship Program. To qualify for this honor, students must score in the top 3 percent of more than 160,000 African American students who took the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). A roster of these students’ names is sent to about 1,500 colleges and universities. TMI students score high on AP tests

Students of TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas received exceptionally high scores on Advanced Placement (AP) exams taken last spring. TMI students in grades nine through 12 took 217 AP exams in 18 subject areas, achieving qualifying (passing) scores of 3 or higher on 87 percent of the tests. Of those qualifying scores, 63 percent received scores of 4 or 5, the two highest score points. TMI student earns top ACT score

Taylor Devlin, a rising senior at TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas, has been recognized for earning the highest possible score on the ACT college readiness test. She received a composite score of 36, an achievement equaled by less than one-tenth of one percent of all test takers. Among ACT-tested U.S. high school graduates in the class of 2012, only 781 out of more than 1.66 million students earned the highest possible score. Devlin is president of the National Honor Society chapter at TMI and plays volleyball, basketball and softball. TMI recognizes National Spanish Exam winners

TMI Spanish language students in 8th-11th grade took the National Spanish Exam in late March and early April. There were a total of 94 students who won awards. Of those, 20 were gold level (over the 95 percentile), including one freshman, Saad Ehsan, who was in the 99 percentile. Of the gold level winners, 10 scored at the 98 or 99 percentile, nationwide. 2012-2013 school year a banner year for TMI Latin students

The 2012-2013 school year was a banner year for TMI Latin students. More than half of our Latin students received some sort of national recognition for their performance on the National Latin Exam. Moreover, two students scored perfect papers: 7th grader, Ethan Arellano, and junior, Susannah Wright. Susannah also received the Maureen O’Donnell Award and received a copy of the Oxford Classical Dictionary because she earned a gold medal for four consecutive years.
