TMI student named state finalist for Wendy’s honor

Daniel James Gonzalez, a senior at TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas, was named one of 10 Texas male finalists of the Wendy’s High School Heisman Program, honoring young men and women who excel in learning and leading in the classroom, on the field and in the community. Recipients of the honor must be high-school seniors with a grade point average of B (3.0) or better, participate in a school-sponsored sport and be leader in school and in the community. Cadets watch the US Army Best Medic Competition

TMI cadets visited Camp Bullis on October 27, 2012 to observe the Army Best Medic Competition. TMI was the only high school in the area to visit the once-a-year competition that showcases the skills and hard work of Combat Medics in the Army.  Cadets were briefed on the organization of the competition and watched the two-man teams being evaluated in treating simulated combat casualties.  The opportunity gave TMI cadets who are interested in military medical care a chance to observe realistic training in a simulated tactical environment. TMI students named AP Scholars

Twenty-five students from TMI – The Episcopal School were named 2012 AP Scholars by the College Board, which administers the Advanced Placement examinations. The AP Scholar Awards Program recognizes high-school students who have done outstanding work in college-level (Advanced Placement) courses. Receiving AP Scholar awards were TMI seniors Jose Luis De Alba, Eugenio Duron and Blake Smithson and class of 2012 graduates Marian Amini, Abigail Cole, Andrew Dove, Carolina Gonzalez, Alex Mora, Christopher Peace, Collin Shinkle, Tyler Styles, Yonghan Wei and Chad Wisnowski. TMI announces October Cadet of the Month awards

The Texas Military Institute Corps of Cadets recognized sophomore Armando Martinez as Upper School Cadet of the Month and eighth-grader Ana Paula Velasco as Middle School Cadet of the Month for October. Both honorees were recognized during daily chapel at TMI. Martinez, a recipient of the school’s four-year, full-tuition Alkek Scholarship, is a cadet squad leader in the TMI Corps. Velasco is active in middle-school theater and in TMI’s chapter of Interact, a Rotary-sponsored youth community-service organization. Both competed against two other cadets in their divisions, representing the Corps’ three companies. TMI senior earns National Achievement honor

Gabriella Greenfield, a senior at TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas, was named an Outstanding Participant in the National Achievement Scholarship program. The honor recognizes the top three percent of more than 160,000 Black American students who requested consideration in the National Achievement program when they took the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National merit Scholarship Qualifying Texas (PSAT/NMSQT). Their names are referred to more than 1,500 colleges for their potential for academic success. Greenfield received a certificate presented by TMI Upper School Head Bob Ridewood on Oct. 4 during daily chapel services in the school’s All Saints Chapel. TMI students post high AP scores

Of students who took Advanced Placement (AP) examinations last spring at TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas, 83 percent received qualifying scores of 3, 4 or 5 on a scale of 1 through five. Of these qualifying scores, 65 percent merited the two highest score points. By comparison, only 18.1 percent of students nationwide received scores of 3 or above in 2011 (the most recent year available). AP courses are college-level courses, for which high-school students may earn college credits by qualifying with scores of 3 and above. TMI graduates named National Merit Scholars

Two members of the class of 2012 at TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas have received college scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship competition. Alex Hager was awarded a National Merit Texas A&M University Scholarship. Hager was president of his senior class and recently earned a fifth consecutive gold medal in the National Latin Exam – one of fewer than 100 students nationwide to do so. He will attend A&M in the fall, where he will major in Business Administration and International Studies, and plans a career in diplomacy. TMI students earn top honors in national exam

The number of students at TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas who receive honors in the National Spanish Examination continues to grow, said David Archer, chairman of the Foreign Language Department. Of the students who took the 2012 exam, which includes categories for both native and non-native speakers, 94 earned honors for their scores. TMI juniors qualify for National Merit competition

Three juniors at TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas have met the requirements to enter the 2013 National Merit Scholarship competition. Brooke Dippo-Foderaro, Zephyrine Parten and Patrick Wickham are among the 50,000 highest-scoring participants out of 1.5 million program entrants who took the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). About 34,000 high scorers will be named Commended Students and will receive notification in September. Approximately 16,000 will become semifinalists in the program, to be announced in February 2013.
