7/13/2018 Simon Bruhn and Claire Hughes, both rising juniors at TMI Episcopal, represented their school at the Texas – Capital Area Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) seminar, held June 8-10 on campus at the University of Texas at Austin.The three-day summer seminar for high-school students going into their junior year includes interactive activities and workshops that enable participants to discover their personal leadership strengths. After learning about leadership from different perspectives, students learn to cultivate their skills to lead others toward making a positive impact in their community.
“It was great to meet people from all over Texas, from cities and rural areas, who share a desire to improve their communities,” said Bruhn, who enjoyed the group activities in leadership development and a motivational talk by Daron K. Roberts, a former NFL coach and founding director of the Center for Sports Leadership & Innovation at the University of Texas.
“HOBY was an amazing experience that taught me many things,” said Hughes. “The one thing I hope to always remember is that leadership isn’t about delegating, it’s about empowering.”
Inspired by a 1958 visit with humanitarian Dr. Albert Schweitzer, actor Hugh O’Brian (1925-2016) founded HOBY as a seminar for young leaders. Since then, the program has grown to conduct annual seminars in leadership training and service learning throughout the United States. More than 10,000 high-school students participate in HOBY’s 70 State Leadership Seminars each year.
