
Students from TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas earned honors Feb. 21 at the Texas State Junior Classical League (TSJCL) Area B Convention at Reagan High School.
Twenty-one TMI Middle School students and 18 Upper School students joined 1,200 area classics students to take part in the daylong competition.
First-place ribbons and trophies went to Joey Kyle, Ancient Geography and Monuments, Level ½ A; Michael LeJune, Elementary Grammar, ½ B; Bridget Lynch, Roman Life, ½ B; and Kyle Nevitt, Reading Comprehension, ½ B.
Second-place ribbons went to Allison Dickie, Vocabulary, Level ½ A; Amanda Kyle, Mythology, ½ A; Anne Masterson, Ancient Geography, ½ B; Will Oliver, Vocabulary, ½ B; and Jack Torpey, Dramatic Interpretation, ½ B.
Third-place ribbons went to Nyssa Brown, Mythology, Level ½ B; William Elms, Greek History, ½ B; Clifford Geyer, Vocabulary, ½ B; Lucas Prado, Latin Derivatives, ½ A; and Jacob Saenger, Reading Comprehension, II.
Further honors in individual subject tests went to Patrick Behrens, Samantha Dickie, Peter Fera, Dillon Goldmann, Lucas Kirma, Chinedu Ofoegbu, Emmet Owen, Allie Prado, Manaal Salman, Karina Samuel and Jiayi Zhu.
All students at the convention also take the Pentathlon, a general Latin knowledge test. These awards, along with those in individual subject tests, earn points for each school toward the sweepstakes trophy.
TMI students earning Pentathlon honors were: Ethan Arellano, Amanda Kyle, Joey Kyle and Jiayi Zhu, summa cum laude; Patrick Behrens, Nyssa Brown, Allison Dickie, Lucas Kirma, Bridget Lynch, Juan Pablo Martinez Cordeiro, Kyle Nevitt, Will Oliver, Emmett Owen, Lucas Prado, Manaal Salman, Jacob Saenger and Emmie Walsh, maxima cum laude; Jacob Carter, Samantha Dickie, Dillon Goldman, Ally Kotopoulos, Michael LeJune, Allie Prado, Jack Torpey and Harry Ware, magna cum laude; and Austin Carothers, Peter Fera, Borna Hajivandi, Brooke Kotopoulos, Anne Masterson, Royya Osouli and Will Elms, cum laude.
TMI Middle School students placed third in Sweepstakes Silver Division, and Upper School students placed fifth in Sweepstakes Gold. They will go on to compete at the TSJCL state convention March 27-29 in Waco.
