
Cellist Christine Lamprea of Leon Springs, a graduate of TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas the Juilliard School, won first place, senior division, in the annual Sphynx Competition, held Feb. 17 at the Max M. Fisher Music Center in Detroit.
The competition is open to young African American and Hispanic classical string players. Finalists receive the opportunity to compete under the guidance of an internationally renowned panel of judges and to perform with established professional musicians.
Lamprea, a graduate student at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, will receive a $10,000 award and opportunities to perform as a soloist with orchestras around the country.
A broadcast of the Finals Concert will be available on demand Feb. 24 on the website of Detroit Public Television, http://www.dptv.org.
