Cassie’s artwork will be displayed at Clamp Light Artist Studios & Gallery from April 9, 2021-May 1, 2021.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Coalesce is a solo exhibition by Cassie Gnehm, a current Clamp Light Resident Artist. Gnehm is exhibiting a series of recent oil and acrylic paintings created during the COVID-19 quarantine. Gnehm interweaves female forms (both past and present) by using traditional and experimental painting techniques. These large-scale portraits are constructed from images of women in art history and contemporary media. Gnehm layers imagery and texture to create a new portrait showing women in a new way. Through the complex history of figurative oil painting, these intricately painted portraits recreate women’s roles in painting and shift the gaze from a male perspective to a female one.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Cassie Gnehm is an artist and educator at TMI Episcopal in San Antonio, Texas. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Columbus College of Art and Design and her Master of Fine Arts from West Virginia University. Gnehm’s work examines the representation of the female body throughout art history and contemporary culture. By repainting and collaging over these historical figures Gnehm takes back control of the female form and draws comparisons between bodies past and present. Gnehm was awarded residences at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts as well as the Vermont Studio Center. The most recent exhibitions she has been included in are Dreams and Their Edges, curated by John Seed (Author of Disruptive Realism); Third Coast Biennial; Curated by Rigoberto Luna (CoFounder of Presa House Gallery); Texas National Competition and Exhibition; Curated by Michelle White (Senior Curator, The Menil Collection) She was also recently commissioned by the city of San Antonio World Heritage office. Gnehm is a drawing and painting teacher and has taught internationally as well as at the college level.
