TMI’s Pink Panthers robotics team won a first-place award at the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Alamo Regional Qualifier, held Jan. 23 at Lutheran High School.
A robotics team from TMI –The Episcopal School of Texas won a first-place award at the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Alamo Regional Qualifier, held Jan. 23 at Lutheran High School.
Competing against 21 other schools, TMI’s Pink Panthers team won the Champions Award for excellence in robot design, core values and research. They also qualified for the next round at the Alamo Regional Championship, to be held March 12 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention center.
FLL competition is open to students in fourth through eighth grade. This year’s challenge, “Trash Talk,” focused on alleviating landfill issues. Teams conducted research projects, then built and programmed robots to solve related problems. The TMI Pink Panthers prepared a project to recycle and repurpose PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic used in beverage containers as fibers for clothing, with a goal of employing women in at-risk situations.
Coached by James Lewey, the Pink Panthers included TMI Middle School students Bella Grossman, Chloe Harthan, Priscilla Lobo, Annie Mosis, Mikae Mumme and Newton Tran.
Another TMI team, Asimov’s Panthers, worked on a project to recapture sulfur from used tires to use in fertilizer.
