Two TMI teams participated in the Academic WorldQuest competition sponsored the World Affairs Council of San Antonio on Tuesday, February 23rd. The Junior-Senior team included senior Erik Peterson and juniors Evan Gardner, Farouk Ramzan, and Jack Waters. The Freshmen-Sophomore team included sophomores Elise Bostian and Owen Bruhn, with freshmen Khivan Raina and Calvin Walls. Both were quizzed on their knowledge of international relations and current events, with special topics ranging from the legacy of the Arab Spring to the International Labor Organization.
Unsure whether the obstacles created by last week’s storm would prevent them from competing, the teams were able to safely gather on campus and, fueled by pan dulce and trail mix, got on Zoom and faced down 12 teams from six schools. In a very strong showing, the Junior-Senior team finished in 2nd place overall with the Freshmen-Sophomore team close behind in third place.
When asked to explain their success, the Junior-Senior team gave credit to TMI’s Vox Populi club while the Freshmen-Sophomore team just had very strong players, including one self-described “grandmaster at all things related to Uzbekistan.” Congratulations to all our TMI Academic WorldQuest competitors!
