TMI debater wins top place in statewide contest

7/30/2018 Rachel Davis, a rising sophomore at TMI Episcopal, excelled at the Texas Great Debate, sponsored by the National Hispanic Institute and held June 7-10 at Austin College in Sherman. With a partner, Noah Adams from Central Catholic High School, Davis competed in cross-examination and placed second overall. Both were members of the San Antonio team, one of eight regional teams entered in the four-day competition. At TMI, Davis is one of two recipients in her class year of an Alkek Scholarship, the school’s only four-year, full-tuition merit award. She was named last year to TMI’s Freshman Scholastic Society, was chosen to represent her class in the school’s Poetry Out Loud recitation contest, acted in the fall and spring plays, was selected as an Ambassador (tour guide) for the Admissions Office and qualified for the state meet in cross-country.

About 300 high-achieving sophomores from high schools across Texas participated in team and individual events including Cross Examination, Extemporaneous Speaking, Mock Trial and Oratory. The central theme of this year’s debate was “social labels and how they influence the Latino community.”

Since 1981, the National Hispanic Institute has offered opportunities for young people to develop their potential as community leaders. The Great Debate is the nonprofit organization’s flagship program.
