TMI LAX coaches win statewide awards

The TMI varsity lacrosse team celebrates its third district win in a row, which qualifies the team for regional playoffs of the Texas High School Lacrosse League.

Both varsity lacrosse coaches at TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas received top district honors from the Texas High School Lacrosse League (THSLL).

Head Lacrosse Coach John Beck was named Coach of the Year for the league’s San Antonio district, and Blake Skinner was named Assistant Coach of the Year.

The team clinched its third district championship in a row with a 15-3 win April 21 over Smithson Valley High School, qualifying for regional playoffs to determine the teams that will compete in playoffs for the state championship.

The THSLL coaching awards honor those varsity coaches who exemplify the ideas of the game and are intended to recognize individuals’ overall coaching performance and contribution, not just coaching wins. Coaches are nominated by an awards selection committee at the district level; these honorees will be candidates for the Texas Area U.S. Lacrosse Coach of the Year and Assistant Coach of the Year to be voted on by the Texas Area All-American Selection Committee.

Both Beck and Skinner “have exemplified not only a successful season but have been active in fall and youth lacrosse as well,” said Josh Acut, San Antonio district coordinator. “Through coaching and mentoring, they continue to produce outstanding student athletes who not only represent TMI but also represent San Antonio.”

Both are previous winners of the coaching awards – Beck for the past two years, and Skinner in 2014.
