TMI cadet tapped for Girls State

TMI junior Jessica Corley accepts a certificate of acceptance to Texas Girls State from TMI Headmaster John W. Cooper, Ph.D., right, after the honor was announced by Assistant Commandant Joseph Claburn, a member of the American Legion post whose auxiliary nominated Corley.

Jessica Corley, a junior at TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas, was nominated to attend Texas Bluebonnet Girls State 2014, to be held from June 15 to June 21 at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin.

The program, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Texas, gives girls about to enter their senior year of high school an opportunity to learn how government works by performing the same duties as real office holders. Participants organize their own city, county and state governments, electing officials, learning the duties of the various offices and introducing and debating bills in a mock legislature. Texas Girls State concludes with a visit to the state capitol in Austin, where participants tour the building and meet state officials.

Requirements for school nominees include demonstrated accomplishments of leadership, citizenship and character in their schools and community.

Corley is a second lieutenant in the Texas Military Institute Corps of Cadets and previously has been the recipient of the Superior Cadet Award for her year. Next year, she will serve as battalion adjutant, a staff officer position. She is a member of the National Honor Society, won an award recognizing her talent and enthusiasm as a member of the TMI Upper School Choir and earned Top 10 places in competition at the Texas State Junior Classical League Convention.
Corley was sponsored by the Auxiliary of American Legion Post 593 in Converse, of which TMI’s assistant commandant, retired Army Maj. Joseph Claburn is an active member.

Three other TMI juniors – Markell Henderson, Gerardo Martinez and Leo Solis – were nominated to attend Texas Boys State 2014, to be held June 8-13 on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.
