Major Joe Claburn Announces Departure as the Commandant of Cadets

[March 6, 2025, San Antonio, TX] After 12 strong years of service to TMI Episcopal, Major Joe Claburn, United States Army (Ret.) will step down as the Commandant of the Texas Military Institute Corps of Cadets in the summer of 2025.

A dedicated Army veteran, Major Claburn first joined TMI as the Assistant Commandant in 2012 following his remarkable military career. He was promoted to be the Deputy Commandant in 2015 and was then appointed to serve as the Commandant of Cadets in 2019, where he made a lasting impact. Under his leadership, the Corps of Cadets grew to its largest enrollment in 50 years, including a record number of female Cadets, strengthening TMI’s legacy as a premier leadership and military program.

Major Claburn intends to remain active in the TMI community as a parent of a Cadet and a supporter of the JROTC program. “Serving the TMI community has been one of the greatest privileges of my life and I remain humbled by getting the unique chance to lead so many leaders during my time on campus,” expressed Major Claburn. “I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that the Corps will continue to achieve great success, build future leaders, and maintain the reputation of being the Keepers of Tradition for another 131 years.”

TMI Episcopal has begun the search for a new Commandant of Cadets. Committed to a seamless transition, Major Claburn will continue to serve until his successor is in place. The Texas Military Institute Corps of Cadets remains a signature program for TMI Episcopal and an Honor Unit with Distinction (one of the top JROTC Programs in the nation). TMI looks forward to continuing to build on the Corps’ 131-year history of greatness.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Major Claburn for his years of service, leadership, and dedication to our community. His contributions have left an enduring legacy at TMI, and we wish him the very best in his next chapter.
