Alex Perotti, a senior at TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas, has signed a national letter of intent to play football at Abilene Christian University (ACU), a Division II school in the Lone Star Conference.

Perotti has played tight end and defensive end on Panther varsity teams for the past three years. For the 2009 season, he was named by coaches and sportswriters to two San Antonio Express-News honor teams, all-district first team and all-state second team, both offensive and defensive. A multisport athlete, he lettered in baseball, basketball and cross-country as well as football.

Having played football since fifth grade, Perotti said, “I always hoped I would be able to play in college, but I couldn’t have done it without these guys,” gesturing to the TMI football coaching staff who attended his signing ceremony Feb. 3 in TMI’s Helen and Everett Jones Library. “This is an inspirational program. They give you a lot of guidance.”

Perotti has been a student at TMI since sixth grade, playing football since middle school. Earlier in his high-school career, coaches challenged him to prepare for the possibility of playing college football. “We told him where he needed to be, and he got there,” said Curran. Through daily workouts, weight training and a healthy diet, Perotti transformed himself into a bigger, stronger athlete.

Last fall, Curran started sending out videos of Perotti and calling college coaches on his behalf. “It was just a matter of finding the right place for him,” said Curran. That turned out to be ACU, where Perotti expects to play outside linebacker for the Wildcats next fall.

“For a player from a small high school, it’s an outstanding honor to be selected to play football at the college level,” says Brian Curran, TMI’s head football coach. “Alex is a leader by example. He not only has the physical skills required to play football, he has the heart to play a tough game. Alex has worked hard and he deserves this.”
Perotti also has participated in community-service activities and peer mentoring at TMI and he is a member of the youth group at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. The son of Mo and Bill Perotti, he plans to study architecture at ACU.

TMI sophomore Tyler McArdle headed a team that won second place overall in the SA48HR Film Experience, a local filmmaking event that challenges contestants to produce a short film in 48 hours. The competition is limited to 15 sponsored teams; each is given elements to incorporate into a film of no more than eight minutes.

McArdle was editor and codirector with Sergio Ramos of “Letters to Nowhere,” a film about a man who has a fateful meeting while wandering around a gritty San Antonio streetscape.

Other members of Team Sausage Fest Inc. were Jacob Shirmer, screenwriter with Ramos, and Cesar Martinez, camera operator. All are participants in Say Si, a nonprofit, multidisciplinary student arts program. Of the finalists, they were the youngest contestants and the only students.

This year’s theme was The Best of Friends; McArdle’s team drew the following variables: character, Carol, the butcher from New York; location, wrong side of the tracks; and line, “Can we do this later?”

Tyler McArdle

“We were lucky,” says McArdle. “These were some of the easiest elements to work with, so we had a lot of ideas for movies.” After the team members chose the one that seemed most workable, they divided their 48 hours among writing, shooting and editing the short film.

Their team also had the lowest budget of any of the submitting filmmakers. “We did it all for $75,” says McArdle. “We spent it on costumes from the Salvation Army and food from Taco Cabana.” Their locations also were free; the young filmmakers shot outdoors on Cevallos Street, near Southtown, and in the East Side complex of city cemeteries.

SA48HR films were shown Dec. 8 at the Santikos Bijou Theater. An awards ceremony Dec. 16 at Sunset Station recognized the first-, second-, third-place and audience-award winners. Team Sausage Fest won a camera accessory, a month of studio time at C4 Workspace and Gallery and coupons to local restaurants.

The unexpected win gave McArdle confidence, he says: “I’ll definitely be entering other contests this spring.”

A graduate of San Antonio Academy, he is the son of Leticia and Douglas McArdle.

TMI senior Jaclyn Bowes has been judged one of the outstanding student artists entered in the Western Art Contest and Exhibit sponsored by the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo.

Her watercolor painting, “High Flyer,” was selected as one of the Top 50 artworks among more than 570 submitted this year to the Stock Show’s student art contest. The winning artworks may be viewed Feb. 4-21 in the Hall of Fame on the Freeman Coliseum grounds.

Bowes also was chosen as one of 14 students to receive a scholarship for summer study at the Museum of Western Art Academy in Kerrville. Courses are taught by professional artists, and students may receive college credit.

Last fall, Bowes won both first-place and runner-up awards in the Young Adults category of the Inspire Fine Art Center’s Emerging Artists Juried Art Show.

“Jackie Bowes is one of the most naturally gifted art students that I have had the privilege to teach,” says TMI art teacher Allan Rupe. “Her amazing attention to detail puts her a step above the rest.”

At TMI, Bowes is a member of National Honor Society, plays varsity tennis, has competed in Junior Classical League events and shown her work at the annual ISAS (Independent Schools Association of the Southwest) Fine Arts Festival. She is currently enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) Studio Art, a college-level course that requires students to submit a portfolio of 29 works in a variety of media.

She is the daughter of Anita King Bowes, M.D., and Harrison N. Bowes Jr., M.D.

###

Founded in 1893, TMI is a private, co-educational, college-preparatory school for grades 6-12, with optional Junior ROTC and boarding programs. For information, visit www.tmi-sa.org or call 698-7171.

The Rev’d W.L. “Chip” Prehn, Ph.D, has been asked to contribute the chapter on Episcopal schools to Faith-Based Schooling in the United States, a book scheduled for publication by Praeger Academic in early 2011. The volume will be co-edited by James Carper and Thomas Hunt, Professors of History at the Universities of South Carolina and Dayton, respectively. Prehn was recommended for the job by Dr. Daniel Heischman, Executive Director of the National Association of Episcopal Schools, New York, New York.

The editors of Faith-Based Schooling promise a “definitive study” of the history, nature, motives, and challenges of faith-based education in America, from the colonial era through our own time. The editors have commissioned scholars from most religious traditions to make contributions to the volume. Prehn will contribute 6000 words on the history and nature of schools identifying, more and less, with the Anglican and Episcopal religious tradition. Many of the finest schools in American history have possessed this Episcopal identity.

Prehn received the Ph.D in the History of American Education from the University of Virginia in 2005. He wrote the first-ever history of the school-making movement initiated by William Augustus Muhlenberg (1796-1877) and his protégés. These exemplary priests established several elite Church schools—the model Episcopal schools—admired by educators on both sides of the Atlantic.

Chip Prehn has been serving Saint Luke’s Church & School, San Antonio, on an “interim” basis since August 2005. Prehn is a Trustee of TMI-The Episcopal School of Texas. He served the school as Chaplain between 1996 and 2001, and as Assistant Headmaster in the 1999-2000 school year.
